What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine practice that involves piercing your skin with ultra-thin needles to relieve pain or treat a health condition. It’s a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that’s been in use for more than 2,000 years.

Your provider inserts the needles in specific areas called acupuncture points, or acupoints. The acupoints connect to one another on energy pathways, or meridians, that govern your overall health. Pressure from the needles clears energy blockages and maximizes what TCM practitioners call your “qi” or life force.

How does acupuncture work?

When your acupuncturist places the needles in your acupoints, it provokes your nervous system to unleash chemicals throughout your body. The placement of the needles redirects the flow of energy to the damaged areas where it reactivates your body’s innate healing mechanisms.

What are the meridians?

There are 12 primary and eight secondary meridians with which your acupuncturist works during your session. The 12 main meridians are linked to an organ and include:

  • Liver meridian
  • Bladder meridian
  • Stomach meridian
  • Heart meridian
  • Lung meridian
  • Large intestine meridian
  • Kidney meridian
  • Small intestine meridian
  • Spleen meridian
  • Pericardium meridian
  • Gallbladder meridian
  • Triple warmer meridian

Across the entire meridian network, there are more than 300 acupuncture points.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Surprisingly, no. In fact, many of Daly Integrated Medical Group’s patients find the procedure relaxing. You may feel a slight pinch or some tingling, but it doesn’t hurt or cause any residual pain.
